Carrilet Greenway I

The Carrilet Greenway I (Olot–Girona) is a Catalan greenway that follows the old narrow-gauge railway line between the regions of La Garrotxa, La Selva, and El Gironès. It covers about 57 km of volcanic landscapes, river valleys, and towns with historical heritage, integrating into the network of Girona Greenways and the Spanish Natural Trails Program.

Route and surroundings

The itinerary starts in La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone, at an altitude of 440 m, and gently descends to Girona (70 m). It crosses the valleys of the Fluvià, Brugent, and Ter rivers, with areas of high ecological and cultural value. Among the most notable towns are Les Preses, Sant Feliu de Pallerols, Amer, Anglès, and Salt. The path, equipped with bridges, railings, and uniform signage, allows visitors to contemplate elements such as the Castell d’Hostoles and the Ter pastures.

Connections and uses

In Girona, it connects with the Carrilet Greenway II towards Sant Feliu de Guíxols, forming a continuous cycle tourism corridor to the Mediterranean. It also connects with the Ruta del Ferro i del Carbó (Sant Joan de les Abadesses–Olot). Its compacted sauló surface makes it suitable for hybrid, gravel or mountain bikes, and part of the route is accessible for wheelchairs or handbikes.

Landscape and cultural value

The route combines inactive volcanoes, Mediterranean forests, agricultural fields, and recovered railway heritage. It is a prime example of the sustainable reuse of old infrastructure, promoting active tourism and the conservation of Girona's natural and rural landscape.
